Hello. I noticed that on one of the pages of the Bravolander -the one pertaining to the historical flags- that there is an interesting flag for Graaff-Reinet. Was this the actual flag that was used by the Boers in 1795 when they declared the first Boer Republic there? I am wondering as I was under the impression that the flag they used was the horizontal red white & blue tri colour. I read that this flag was also used at the Swellendam Republic during 1795 as well.

I noticed too that it is quite similar to the flag the Bravoland has adopted. I was familiar with all of the other past Boer flags but I had never seen that design before & was wondering is this was the actual flag they used.

Thanks for any help or information that you might be able to provide as I am interested in the history of your people & of their flags.

Hello Anonynous,

Some of the flags you see on these two pages were designed as options for the new Afrikaner-flag. These were the designs they considered.

The flag is called the Graaff-Reinet flag because it was designed by someone living in Graaff-Reinet, this is not actually an historical flag.

And you are correct, the one used by the Boers in 1795 was a red, white and blue tri-colour.

The flag Bravoland adopted is called the Triomph flag, it was designed by Barend Uys, it is also similar to the flag of Norway, but the colours are different and the measurements are also different.

I hope this information is helpful.

Thank you for the information Karina de Jager. It was indeed helpful. I thought for a moment that I might have missed an historical Boer flag -as unfortunately my Afrikaans is not too good seeing as I grew up in Canada- while I was browsing some of the pages of the Bravolander posted here which caught my eye as they were displaying a number of historical Boer flags as well as some flag proposals. So the flag I was wondering about was in fact a proposal & not a historical flag.

I like the flag that Bravoland adopted as it is quite striking. I noticed its similarity to the Norwegian flag. I think the cross design is referred (probably unofficially) to as the Scandinavian Cross as this cross design is used in a number of other Scandinavian flags.

I noticed that the Bravoland flag is called the Triompf flag but when was this flag adopted? I was searching all over the blog for a date for when it was adopted. I am guessing that it must have been adopted by this past September.

I once thought of a possible design for a new Afrikaner flag of being the old South African flag but with the Potchefstroom / Voortrekker / Potgieter flag (variations of this flag appear to have a number of names) in place of where the British flag was next to the two Boer Republic flags of the Transvaal & Orange Free State as the old Potchefstroom flag was somewhat similar to the Union Jack. Which is probably why it was unpopular in the Transvaal Republic when President T F Burgers tried to bring it back as a national flag.

Therefore I was not too surprised to see the various designs featured
which simply replaced the Union Jack with another former Boer Republic flag.

Thanks again for your helpful information as it certainly cleared up a question I had.

Hi Ron, sorry for taking so long to get back to you...

The Triumph flag was adopted last year in June.

We asked people to send in designs for a possible new flag and after a certain time an election began. The members of Bravoland voted for their favourite flag and the Triumph flag triumphed! ;-)

27 June 2007 was proclaimed as Bravoland's Flagday.

Our first birthday is also coming up shortly - 24 April. You can have a look at www.bravoland.co.za, this site is actually just the blog for the newspaper.

Have a great day!

Kind regards,
Karina
